Back Story on the beneficiary:

In 1993, sixteen women joined together to raise awareness and philanthropic funds for Breast Health programs at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. Now consisting of over 270 women, The Women’s Committee continues to have a profound impact, having raised millions of dollars to support health and wellness programs for women and their families through their annual fundraisers.

Philanthropy is vital to The Caring Tradition at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital and it is only through continued generous contributions of time, effort and money that we can support these important programs, services, and state-of-the-art technologies.

The following constitute a partial summary of the programs and services The Women’s Committee has supported through proceeds from their annual events:

Early Detection – Over twenty years of support has been given for the imaging technology in breast health and care, from mobile imaging, digital mammography, MRI breast imaging, ultrasound, stereotactic biopsy, to most recently, support for 3D Mammography (Breast Tomosynthesis) to round out the arsenal of cutting-edge early detection and diagnostic tools.

Cancer Resource Center – Oncology-Certified Nurse Navigators provide education materials, resources and support for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Marianne’s Room – A special resource room for women diagnosed with cancer providing wigs, scarves, special “Chemo Caps”, soft post-operative prostheses, and camisoles given to breast cancer patients after a mastectomy.

Enhancing the Quality of Life – Massage therapy, yoga, exercise classes, Celebration of Life program and a fly-fishing weekend for cancer patients intended to enhance relaxation and overall sense of well-being; an integral part of care and healing.

Cloak of Caring – Programs providing comfort and support indicative of Martha Jefferson’s Caring Tradition: Palliative Care, Lymphedema Care, Caring Embrace shawls, and comfortable robes to wear during mammograms.  Blanket warmers and chairs for the Infusion Center to ensure that patients are made as comfortable as possible while undergoing treatment.
